Camping at Cherrystone June 2010

Cherrystone Camping Resort June 6 – 13, 2010
Sunday, June 6, 2010 - Our next camping adventure took us out to the eastern shores of Virginia during the first week of June, 2010. Garland, canine companion Emma and myself, along with Mom (Ruby), Sandy, Ryan & Brent got on the road Sunday morning @ 7:30 am. The 2 camping families met up @ Hardee’s in Riverdale for breakfast and we promptly headed east on 58 by 7:50 a.m. The traffic was light until we got closer to Virginia Beach. The weather was perfect, maybe just a little warm. The highlight of course was the drive over/under Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. I have traveled this historic structure many times and probably was one of the first over when I was a child. We used to come and visit my father’s sister & family back in the 60’s thru 80’s. We would drive down from Long Island, NY and would take Rt. 13. Before the bridge tunnel was built we had to take the ferry. We arrived at Cherrystone camp grounds by 12:30 pm. Not bad travel time considering we made 2 potty breaks on the way down. The camp ground is situated on the Chesapeake Bay. I think just about every site here is nice with some shade and a breeze. We were located at site # 635 and Sandy at # 636. We have great views of the bay right from our sites! I think if we come down again we would like to be back one row and in one or two sites. The sites are nice and level, easy to get into and clean. It was not very crowded, which I like. We also were in an area for campers with pets (dogs). I think there are dogs all around us. They range from Saint Bernards to small yapping dogs! And there was another Aussie that looks a lot like Emma. Ruby says that Emma is prettier! Well, anyway, we had no problem getting set up. Sandy went and rented a golf cart. I think we were all a little tired, so we didn’t do anything much that afternoon but check out the campgrounds and relax. Oh, I almost forgot, a wren made a nest in the hook up for our fifth wheel and sadly we traveled with 4 immature baby birds that we had to remove from the nest when we arrived. I couldn’t destroy them, so we put them in some high grasses down near the water, but they couldn’t survive. A little girl at the campsite next to ours found them in the morning
and buried them in the sand.
Monday June 7 – Emma & I were up early to walk. I didn’t take her around the whole campground as I wasn’t sure if they allowed that, but I later learned that as long as I had a doggie poop bag or other collecting device with me then we could walk just about anywhere. After breakfast we all decided to drive to the Cape Charles Wildlife Refuge located next to the Bay bridge tunnel. They had a butterfly walking trail and an abandoned gun battery with two huge bunkers for protection of the eastern shore of Virginia during WWII. The guns had only been test fired a couple of times and never used again after that. We all hiked along the trail until we came to the marsh overlook. The path was mostly shady which was nice since it was warmer that day. Heading back, Garland decided we needed to take a short cut! I said we needed to return the way we came, following the signs! His short cut involved walking along the road on the HOT pavement. Finally, we stopped on the side of the road after walking about 1 ½ miles. It was just too much for Ruby and Emma. Garland & Sandy hiked the remainder of the way, another 1 mile until a truck came along and gave them a lift. They returned with vehicles to head home. The short cut was a lot longer than Mr. Virginia Defense Force man with map training experience!
He should have LISTENED to his WIFE! Well no harm done. When we arrived back at the camp sites we all ate some lunch. I think I took a nap. There are plenty of things to keep us occupied.
We brought bicycles, games like Monopoly (card game), Yahtzee, beanbag toss, I have my knitting, reading and of course blogging. Can’t forget picture taking , and searching for oysters & crabs.
Tuesday June 8 – Garland & I decided to drive up north to see what we could find. So after breakfast we headed out with Emma of course. I was curious to find some quaint little bay or sea side villages.
We drove into Cheriton, Exmore and Onely. Willie’s Wharf. Found small shipyards, fishing/crabbing/oyster/mussel businesses.
We stopped at a Rose’s to get a $5.00 basketball for the boys.
The camp ground wanted $ 20 to rent one!
They are building a Mega Big Walmart about 20 miles north of here.
It should be ready in 2 months.
Garland spoke with a man at a local True Value who said the towns have been fighting against it for a long time. Sad that they couldn’t keep it out!
HATE the Walmart!
Try to find something made in America in a Walmart! The boys, (Ryan & Brent) rented fun trikes/cycles for 2 hours in the afternoon. They really seemed to be enjoying them. After dinner, (see photos for menu). Sandy & Garland set up for the outdoor movie show. Sandy has a movie projector. They hung a white sheet off the side of Sandy’s camper and the chairs were set up under our awning. The movie of choice was “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”. The weather had turned much cooler so we all bundled up with throw blankets, some in their pajama’s. Microwave popcorn! We were having a great time, what a sight we must have been to the campers that walked by us. Sandy said we should have watched a 3D movie, than it would have been even funnier to see a bunch of people sitting outside in the dark, with 3D glasses on watching a movie projected on a sheet hung on the side of a camper! We will have to save that one for next trip! Well everyone seemed tired or cold, so the movie ended early.

More Easter weekend camping at Staunton River

Easter morning, Emma & I were up and out walking around 6:30 am. I had my camera along in case we saw any deer. We headed back down towards the pool. I did not see any deer at first, I guess they all were attending the Sunrise Easter Service, but as we were walking I spotted a deer at the edge of the woods...we kept walking and a couple deer popped out of the woods..seemed like they were following us. So, I stood very still for a while. Tried to get some pictures. I wanted to go to my church, St. John's Episcopal in Halifax for the Easter service, so headed back to camper to get dressed. Garland was still asleep when I left at 7:30 am.. Church was full with families, I surprised my sister, Carol as she did not think I would make it back into town for church. After church, I headed back down to Scottsburg to the park. It was another beautiful day! Garland was walking Emma out on one of the many trails when I returned. The day before Josh told us about a new Geocache that was set at the park, so Garland & I decided to give it a go..Ryan & Brent did not want to join us, so we headed out on our own. It was a multi coordinant hunt. You get clues for the final coordinate at each of the many caches. so we headed out...At the 2nd stop, on the trail Garland reminded me to watch for snakes and WHAT do you think I found when looking for the cache? A BLACK SNAKE!!! (see photo). I am not as ruffled by these creatures like my husband is. Emma got hot and needed to cool off at one of the coordinate locations. Well, after 2 1/2 hours and 5 caches later we found the final cache. What a great trek..Garland, Emma & I really enjoy these adventures..we work well together in locating the cache..What is nice about these Geocache is that you do not have to be an expert hiker..and only equipment required is a GPS. And what was really fun was that we were rewarded with a cool Staunton River State Park softsided cooler for completing the entire hunt. When we got back to the camper we had lots of visitors waiting for us. Our friends Kevin & Mary Owen rode up in Mary's convertable sports car for a visit. They would have loved the geocache, we will have to take them along next time we go on one. Keith, Christy, Christian & Lukas had also arrived for the afternoon. There was an Easter Egg hunt over behind the visitor center that Pam & Harold had put togethr for the children. As you can see everyone had fun. Here are photos of the girls & guys that had camped out for the weekend.

Staunton River state Park April 1-5, 2010

Staunton River State Park, Scottsburg VA April 1 – 5, 2010 Camping Adventure #2 for 2010 Our camping saga continues with our 2nd annual Easter retreat to Staunton River State Park in Scottsburg, Va. Located just about 30 miles from my front door. The weather for this weekend could not be better! 80 degree temperatures and not a rain cloud in the sky. I counted 8 families/campers in our group this weekend. Plan to take picturs of every family group for blog. Garland and his sister Sandy arrived Thursday April 1 to get their campers set up. The second thing Garland did after getting the camper secure was to hook up his TV…heaven forbid he can’t watch SOMETHING! There isn’t any quality TV reception here, so he rented about 100 movies! Garland came back into work on Friday while Sandy stayed at the camp ground awaiting the rest of us Friday afternoon/evening. Oh, Pam & Harold also came in Thursday to set up. I arrived later than planned Friday evening, had a hectic day at work…boy do I need this weekend! The campground was full when I arrived with families eating meals or playing games. Total opposite of our first trip this season when Garland & I were the ONLY campers at the Twin Lakes Park. Sandy had made spaghetti for her bunch. Garland & I ate their leftovers… Brent has a little portable movie projection device that we hooked up to the Xbox and showed a movie, Wolverine on the outside of Sandy’s camper. We must have gotten bored because shadow animals were showing up on the camper as well! The stars were bright and the air temp was just right for a light jacket. Garland & I, plus Emma (can’t forget her!) called it a night around 9:00 pm. I think Garland secretly wanted to watch Sherlock Holmes. I was tired and did not watch much of it..maybe another day. Saturday April 3 – Emma & I were up early for a walk around 6:30 am.. walked down towards the visitor center, and saw 15 or so deer back near the pool. They are so beautiful. We stayed still for a while just watching them.. Tomorrow morning I want to take camera and try to get closer for some nice nature photos. Saturday afternoon, 4:30 pm drinking a glass of cheap Chardonnay from WalMart, Oak Leaf, $ 2.97/bottle. Not bad! And working on the camping blog…good life! Garland, Ryan, Brent, myself & Emma had a 2 hour+ hike in the woods searching for a geocache earlier today. Met some horsefolk.. Garland & Ryan took out across the woods while Brent & I followed the marked trail…We found the cache, (last Thanksgiving Garland, Sean & I had been here and did the same geocache hunt). Garland said we cheated. Anyway, we all really enjoyed our time together away from computers, X-box games and the other modern diversions that keep us from spending quality time together. Had some lunch when we returned. Garland had roast beef with baby swiss cheese on healthy white bread, mayo & horseradish, side pickles & Sunchips from the compost able bag.. I’ll have to see if it really composts in my garden this year! I had red pepper hummus with shredded carrots on a whole grain sandwich round with same chips. After lunch we rode our bicycles over to the park office to buy a t-shirt. Josh, one of the Park Rangers told Garland about a new geocache that was just implemented today. Takes 5 coordinates to locate. We will attempt tomorrow. I found some cute banners for the camper, marked $1.99, I told the cashier that I thought it was priced wrong, I thought it was more $ and she told me yes it was incorrectly marked, should be $.99!!!! Couldn’t believe it, so I brought one for me & Sandy! Wow, am I a BIG spender! Played some cards for a while outside Sandy’s camper with Ruby, Brent, Sandy, Garland, James & Lisa… Before dinner, Garland & I took Emma across to the open field so she could chase a tennis ball. 9:00 pm and we are calling it a night. Had a nice dinner with the family, I fixed grilled boneless chicken breast in marinate of Italian dressing and Margarita mix (didn’t have enough of the salad dressing). Don’t worry, no Tequila was added! Grilled asparagus, YUMMY! Ryan loves it. Burnt garlic toast, didn’t know how to use the gas oven, it was edible and Caesar salad. Sandy had pork ribs, cole slaw, French fries and Monster cookies for desert from Windmill Bakery. I walked Emma back over to the open field after dinner for one last potty walk and we saw some 30 deer at the edge of the woods. We just stood still as long as we could until they got sight and smell of us and they all ran into the woods.
And of course, our usual breakfast consists of eggs, bacon & hash browns..don't forget the coffee!!! Ireally enjoy cooking outside in the electric fry pan.

Twin Lakes Camping Continued

Trying to get the hang of this blogger thing, want to post photos too, but having some difficulty, where is Sean when I need him!
As I was saying, we went geocaching Saturday afternoon along "Between the Lakes" trail. Found the cache, Garland & Emma show off the booty... All the geocache coordinates will be situated just off the trails. So they are not too hard to locate. On the way back to the camper, Emma & I decided to walk the "Dogwood Trail" while Garland headed back to get the fire going. I saw 2 white tail deer along that trail. The trail was not blazed well and I got off track a couple times.
Before dinner we watched the movie "Hangover". Hilarious!!!
Dinner consisted of grilled rib eye, which Garland said his tasted like freezer burn... baked potato and salad. No dessert???
After dinner we watched "Zombie Land". It was ok, slow on the start..would not recommend. Fell asleep a couple times with this one.
Sunday morning was cool but clear. Emma & I were up early, no surprise! Went for a brief potty walk, (for Emma not me). Came back fixed coffee and started working on this blog. Good breakfast, as you can see.
After breakfast, the three of us went out for one last geocache trek..we went back along "Dogwood Trail". Found the cache with some difficulty, as Garland copied down the wrong coordinates. I tried to tell him that they do not place the cache so far from the trail, but does he listen? Luckily for us, I had taken a picture of the coordinates that were posted on the outside board near the office. Who takes pictures of that? Just zoomed in and voila, correct numbers!!!
Nothing interesting in that cache. It was time to head back to camp to start packing up.

Twin Lakes Campground, Green Bay, Virginia March 4-7, 2010-03-07 2nd trip with the Surveyor Camper Garland arrived at Twin Lakes evening of March 4 to set up. He had a microwave dinner which he can not get at home, since we do not have a microwave. The outside water hose was frozen in the morning, so he couldn’t take a shower…no big deal, it is camping! After work on Friday, we (Garland, I and Emma, our Australian Shepherd) headed up to the campground. We arrived around 7:45 pm. We were the only campers there. Still very early in the season! Garland filled the camper water tanks incase the hose froze again. We have some kind of heater system under the camper to keep those tanks from freezing, (Artic Package). I had made corned beef & cabbage on Thursday at home, so I brought the leftovers for our dinner Friday, heated it up in the trusty electric frying pan. My expert husband built a fire in the fire pit too. Emma has to stay tied when outside or on a leash. Not her favorite, since at home she has free range of the 16 acres. But I think she knows it is a temporary situation and we do let her off for some playtime if no one else is around. We watched the movie, 2012 Friday night. It was about the total destruction of the earth due to core collapse and only a bunch of people gets to survive due to some lottery or something. A typical end of world movie. The bad guys get it & most of good guys live. I actually stayed awake for the whole movie. Emma woke me around 5:30 am (which is my normal weekday arising time), she wanted to go out and pee. I tried to go back to sleep, but finally got up around 6:30 am, made a cup of coffee in my new 1 cup Keurig coffee maker that Garland gave me this past Christmas. I tried the K-cup flavor, Newman’s Own Extra Bold.. too strong for me. Then I knit a little on a scarf, took Emma out for a quick trip around the campsite area to pee again. Garland was sleeping all this time. Then around 7:30 I got dressed, no shower, but hey this is camping right, took Emma for a longer walk down by the Goodwin Lake where she pooped-good dog, had my plastic bag to pick up-good Mom! While walking back Emma spotted a Red headed woodpecker in a pine tree.. I need to bring my camera on our next walk about.. About 8:30, Garland still asleep, Emma tied outside watching squirrels. I started breakfast, our camping ritual consists of hash browns, bacon & eggs. Cooked of course in the trusty electric fry pan! Also some grapes & cut up cantaloupe. Garland finally up around 8:40 am, had a cup of coffee then he went off to bathhouse to shower. He came back and said he dropped his underwear on the wet floor, so he went commando! After breakfast we headed out to the beach at the Goodwin Lake. There are two lakes here, hense the name Twin Lakes. The campsites are situated near Goodwin Lake, the smaller of the two. It has a beach, playground, picnic area, volleyball, horseshoes and nice little swimming area. Garland took his metal detector down on the lake beach and Emma & I walked around the lake on the Goodwin Trail. It is a 1.5 mile hike. I had my camera with me this time and was able to get some pictures. Saw 3 turtles sunning on dead tree limbs in the water. Garland found 14 cents, a rusty hoop earring, a beer tab and a rusty nut. Cost $10 for the permit to use the metal detector here, so I guess it only cost $9.86. Walking back from our nice hike we were had 3 surprise visitors, Dawn, Lauren & Oscar!
They were heading down to Halifax to visit the family. David is home for a few days before he leaves on his deployment to Iraq. They stayed for about a ½ hour. Lunch consisted of roast beef & swiss cheese on hearty white bread with mayo & horseradish, pickle on the side. Garland drove to town to get ketchup and cheese, brought a lottery scratch ticket for $10.00. Won $20.00! So this paid for the metal detector permit & the cost of the lottery ticket, so now he is up 14 cents! Saturday afternoon we went geocaching down towards the larger lake along Between the Lakes trail.
