Camping at Cherrystone June 2010

Cherrystone Camping Resort June 6 – 13, 2010
Sunday, June 6, 2010 - Our next camping adventure took us out to the eastern shores of Virginia during the first week of June, 2010. Garland, canine companion Emma and myself, along with Mom (Ruby), Sandy, Ryan & Brent got on the road Sunday morning @ 7:30 am. The 2 camping families met up @ Hardee’s in Riverdale for breakfast and we promptly headed east on 58 by 7:50 a.m. The traffic was light until we got closer to Virginia Beach. The weather was perfect, maybe just a little warm. The highlight of course was the drive over/under Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. I have traveled this historic structure many times and probably was one of the first over when I was a child. We used to come and visit my father’s sister & family back in the 60’s thru 80’s. We would drive down from Long Island, NY and would take Rt. 13. Before the bridge tunnel was built we had to take the ferry. We arrived at Cherrystone camp grounds by 12:30 pm. Not bad travel time considering we made 2 potty breaks on the way down. The camp ground is situated on the Chesapeake Bay. I think just about every site here is nice with some shade and a breeze. We were located at site # 635 and Sandy at # 636. We have great views of the bay right from our sites! I think if we come down again we would like to be back one row and in one or two sites. The sites are nice and level, easy to get into and clean. It was not very crowded, which I like. We also were in an area for campers with pets (dogs). I think there are dogs all around us. They range from Saint Bernards to small yapping dogs! And there was another Aussie that looks a lot like Emma. Ruby says that Emma is prettier! Well, anyway, we had no problem getting set up. Sandy went and rented a golf cart. I think we were all a little tired, so we didn’t do anything much that afternoon but check out the campgrounds and relax. Oh, I almost forgot, a wren made a nest in the hook up for our fifth wheel and sadly we traveled with 4 immature baby birds that we had to remove from the nest when we arrived. I couldn’t destroy them, so we put them in some high grasses down near the water, but they couldn’t survive. A little girl at the campsite next to ours found them in the morning
and buried them in the sand.
Monday June 7 – Emma & I were up early to walk. I didn’t take her around the whole campground as I wasn’t sure if they allowed that, but I later learned that as long as I had a doggie poop bag or other collecting device with me then we could walk just about anywhere. After breakfast we all decided to drive to the Cape Charles Wildlife Refuge located next to the Bay bridge tunnel. They had a butterfly walking trail and an abandoned gun battery with two huge bunkers for protection of the eastern shore of Virginia during WWII. The guns had only been test fired a couple of times and never used again after that. We all hiked along the trail until we came to the marsh overlook. The path was mostly shady which was nice since it was warmer that day. Heading back, Garland decided we needed to take a short cut! I said we needed to return the way we came, following the signs! His short cut involved walking along the road on the HOT pavement. Finally, we stopped on the side of the road after walking about 1 ½ miles. It was just too much for Ruby and Emma. Garland & Sandy hiked the remainder of the way, another 1 mile until a truck came along and gave them a lift. They returned with vehicles to head home. The short cut was a lot longer than Mr. Virginia Defense Force man with map training experience!
He should have LISTENED to his WIFE! Well no harm done. When we arrived back at the camp sites we all ate some lunch. I think I took a nap. There are plenty of things to keep us occupied.
We brought bicycles, games like Monopoly (card game), Yahtzee, beanbag toss, I have my knitting, reading and of course blogging. Can’t forget picture taking , and searching for oysters & crabs.
Tuesday June 8 – Garland & I decided to drive up north to see what we could find. So after breakfast we headed out with Emma of course. I was curious to find some quaint little bay or sea side villages.
We drove into Cheriton, Exmore and Onely. Willie’s Wharf. Found small shipyards, fishing/crabbing/oyster/mussel businesses.
We stopped at a Rose’s to get a $5.00 basketball for the boys.
The camp ground wanted $ 20 to rent one!
They are building a Mega Big Walmart about 20 miles north of here.
It should be ready in 2 months.
Garland spoke with a man at a local True Value who said the towns have been fighting against it for a long time. Sad that they couldn’t keep it out!
HATE the Walmart!
Try to find something made in America in a Walmart! The boys, (Ryan & Brent) rented fun trikes/cycles for 2 hours in the afternoon. They really seemed to be enjoying them. After dinner, (see photos for menu). Sandy & Garland set up for the outdoor movie show. Sandy has a movie projector. They hung a white sheet off the side of Sandy’s camper and the chairs were set up under our awning. The movie of choice was “League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”. The weather had turned much cooler so we all bundled up with throw blankets, some in their pajama’s. Microwave popcorn! We were having a great time, what a sight we must have been to the campers that walked by us. Sandy said we should have watched a 3D movie, than it would have been even funnier to see a bunch of people sitting outside in the dark, with 3D glasses on watching a movie projected on a sheet hung on the side of a camper! We will have to save that one for next trip! Well everyone seemed tired or cold, so the movie ended early.
